Sarasota "Ladies, Let's Go Fishing!"® Seminar Aug. 6-8, 2004
SARASOTA SEMINAR- Another great success! We were pleased to have another successful Gulf Coast event in Sarasota. We wholeheartedly thank our event hosts: Sarasota Yacht Club and Hyatt Sarasota!
LLGF Fishing Report: 8/10/2004
Capt. Dan Keifer: Lots of ladyfish, catfish and trout were caught. Susan Mitchell, Anna Maria, FL, caught the largest fish, a 22" bluefish and Elva Mungai, Parrish, FL, caught a 16" trout. They learned how to fish with lures and look for signs of fish, then accurately cast and catch them!
Capt. Jim Klopfer: Andrea Brasfield, St. Petersburg, FL, caught an 18" red grouper, a mangrove snapper and her first-ever trout! Brenda Burger, Tampa, FL, caught trout and catfish and Carol Reed, Tampa, FL, caught a 19" grouper. Newly acquired skills were learning to tie a spider-hitch, using a dehooker and netcasting. They enjoyed meeting new people.
Capt. Al Shank: For Celene Berman, Sarasota, FL, it was her very first fishing experience and she caught a 14" trout using a DOA Deadly Combo. Their captain empathized that water safety comes before fishing and they learned the "hot" fishing spots are in Sarasota Bay. Their funniest moments were chasing off the cormorants that were after their fish, even as they measured them!
* Chase'n Bait/ Nick McClellan: Pat Nolan, Cape Coral, FL, and Gayle Hall, Bradenton, FL, caught many trout and two ladyfish. They saw dolphin, sharks, and tarpon from their boat and learned to use the dehooker and rig a line. They were thrilled with their first time catching fish with artificial lures. He was a Take the Ladies Fishing sponsor.
Capt. Rick Grasset: With nearly 40 years of fishing experience each, these ladies still found something new to learn. Vicky Cochran and Susan Musser, both from Lakeland, FL learned how to fish a bait ball and caught plenty of fish.
Capt. Roy String: Everyone caught trout and ladyfish and Mary Lanier, Myakka City, FL, hooked a needlefish. Keri Hockett, Palmetto, FL, got a gag grouper, and Sharna Finklestein, Sarasota, FL, reeled in a bluefish. They learned about fish behaviors and different reeling techniques. Stuffer/ Capt. Richard Nutter: Joe Anne O'Hara, Sarasota, FL, caught a triggerfish. Linda Talbot, Largo, FL, caught grunts and all released sharks. The most memorable sight was a grouper that went flying into their net.
Gone Fishin'/ Capt. Jonnie Walker: The excitement on this boat was the 100 lb. tarpon that gave Pat Passeri, Venice, FL, a good challenge for over an hour until it got away! She used 10 lb. test line and a 2/0 circle hook. Trout, ladyfish and a 30 lb. cobia were also caught. They learned artificial lure techniques and the skill of working a tarpon.
Jay Dee/ Capt. Tino Loyal: Lots of red and black grouper as well as barracuda made up their catch. The ladies learned how to use a jig and how to fillet fish.
Fish Head Charters/ Capt. Judd McKean: The gals experienced bottom fishing and trolling and learned how to use a sabiki rig as well as a new recipe for preparing bonita caught by Deb McKillop, Apopka, FL.
Shark II / Capt. Gus Loyal: Each angler caught a least three keepers weighing 25 lbs. and over! Sandy Bloise, Madeira Beach, FL, caught her first king mackerel and a bonita. Trudy Miller, Bellaire, FL, caught two barracuda and a bonita. Barbara Johnson, Largo, FL, caught two bonita and a barracuda. Kathy Thompson, St. Petersburg, FL, caught her first fish ever, a bonita.
The Flying Fish: Julie Mulder, Tampa, FL, and Jackie Farmer, Spring Hill, FL, each got ten grunts and the others caught grouper and perch. They learned how to dehook fish and how to use jigs. Note: Fish referred to as "trout" were spotted sea trout. "Caught" could indicate a release or a landing of legal fish.
Recipe contest winner: Trout Dijon by Susan Mitchell, Annia Maria, FL. This great recipe and others are in the class book - watch for them in the cookbook which is in progress!
