New Anglers Become Winners at “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” Keys University Oct. 18-20, 2019
More than 50 aspiring anglers came from Florida as well as other states to learn from the pros at the award winning “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!®” Keys University, October 18-20 at the Elks Lodge, Tavernier, FL.
On Sunday, awards were presented for the LLGF Fishing Fever tournament. Tournament winners were:
Top Offshore: Stacey Hammes, Berlin, NJ 13 lb. Skipjack Tuna on Capt, Kenny Spaulding Caribsea
Second Place Offshore: Andrea Munchmeyer, Tavernier, FL 12.8 lb. wahoo on Capt Rick Rodriguez Sea Horse
Top Inshore: Alecia Wengert, Greensburg, PA Redfish on Capt. Chris Hanson’s Scales 2 Tales
Second Place Inshore: Nadine Thompson, Islamorada, FL for Snook on Capt. Chris Hanson’s Scales 2 Tales
Top Party Boat: Janet Richards, Jupiter, FL 16” Red Grouper Release on Captain Michael
The University kicked off on Friday with a meet-and-greet social featuring networking, fundraisers and an incredible Master Chef Appetizer Contest. First Place went to Janelle Sujat, Tavernier, FL for Anti Pasta Squares.
Saturday’s events began with classroom presentations on offshore, bottom and inshore fishing, followed by lunch and hands-on fishing skills until 4 pm. Skills such as releasing, conservation, knot tying, bait rigging, spin, net casting, gaffing grapefruits, trailer backing and more were available for hands-on practice.
Saturday events concluded with a silent auction, followed by a networking party with food and fun hosted by Seaside Glassworks, Islamorada, FL.
On Sunday, participants embarked on a fishing adventure out of Whale Harbor Marina, Islamorada, FL followed by a fish fillet demonstration. Fish caught or released included sailfish, mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna, yellowtail snapper, king mackerel, mutton snapper, snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, sharks and more. On Friday was a Bonus Fishing Day.

Friday Oct. 18 Full Day Fishing, Offshore:
Dog House/Capt. Jesse Cromer: The ladies caught yellowtail snapper, an 8 lb. mutton snapper, five king or cero mackerel and released six barracudas from 6.6 to 8.7 lbs.
Caribsea/Capt. Kenny Spaulding: It was blackfin tuna on the menu for Caribsea. The gals caught 13 blackfin tuna ranging from 10 to almost 13 lbs. each. Winning First Place was a 13 lb. Skipjack tuna caught by Stacey Hammes, Berlin, NJ. They also caught a bonito.
Inshore:
Capt. Chris Hanson/Scales to Tales: Fishing out of Flamingo with live bait and artificial shrimp, the ladies released 20 snook from 16 to 25.5 inches with Pat Kucera, Clearwater, FL releasing the two largest. They also caught two 20” redfish, 12 jack crevalle, 27 mangrove snapper, some kept, some released. A busy day!
Sunday Oct. 20, ¾ day fishing.
Offshore:
Sea Horse/Capt. Rick Rodriguez: The group caught five mahi from 8 to 11.8 lbs. Andrea Munchmeyer, Tavernier, FL caught the second place offshore fish, a 12.8 lb. wahoo.
Caribsea/Capt. Kenny Spaulding: The ladies caught 16 large yellowtail snapper 3 to 5 lbs., kingfish, mutton snapper release and bonito. Sheryl Simmons, Leroy, MI had a lively fight with a sailfish, her first sailfish ever. They learned how to cup a reel to slow the fish and noted the distinct color change at the edge of the gulfstream.
Captain Michael: On the party boat on Sunday 15 ladies caught or released 3 yellowtail snapper, 2 porgy at 12”, 56 grunts from 5”-6, 3 blue runners and a 16” red grouper release landing Top Party Boat award for Janet Richards, Jupiter, FL.
Inshore:
Capt. Chris Hanson/Scales to Tales: The ladies caught 6 redfish 13”-26”, 5 snapper 10”-14”, 10 jacks up to 20.5” and 3 snook up to 28”. A bonnet head and lemon shark were released.
Capt. Jeremy Mathis/Ankle Deep Charters: Fishing out of Flamingo area, the group caught or released 13 snook up to 22.5 ”, 8 mangrove snapper 13”- 17”, 7 jacks 12”-20”, 4 trout 16”-18”, 2 baracuda, two 12”-14” redfish up to 17” and two ladyfish up to 23”.
Sportsman’s Adventures/Discovery Channel TV Show boat: Fishing in the Flamingo area, Robin Krueger, Parkland, FL released a 26” snook. The show will air next February.
